What Is the Best Android Tablet

By Adam Bovan

All of a sudden we have a new technology that has threatened to take the PC out of the market. I am sure old-school people and the die hard fans of the PC wouldn't agree to it, but the tablet PCs have become the newest best selling technology of 2011. At the end of the 2011 we can only hope that this new piece of technology brings in new surprises, as more and more research and development is done in this area.

When selecting an Android tablet the first thing one needs to do is to decide what is going to be the main feature of the tablet. I know most people would say I want everything, but if budget is a constrained and if you do not want to spend a cool $600 for an Android powered tablet then you need to make some choices.

The Samsung 10.1 is probably the closest thing that you will experience to an iPad on a Android platform. Smart, sleek and a highly captive screen, the Samsung is a great buy for people who are not price conscious and want a great tablet experience.

The screen is sharp and the over all sleep design is extremely good to feel when using. It is also a great treat to watch movies on the 10.1 inch screen and plays most formats easily. However the absence of a USB port may be conspicuous for all windows users moving into Android. It has a front 2 MP camera and a rear 3 MP camera.

The next in the list is the Motorola Xoom which has been around for a while being the first tablet that had the Android 3.0 or Honeycomb operating system. It also has a 5 MP front camera and a 2 MP rear camera for taking really sharp images for a tablet standard. It also had 4G support and a 10 hour battery life making it a truly powerful tool to have.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 is also a great product because of the detachable dock that allows it to be connected with a keyboard and used like a PC on the go. It has a Nvidia's Tegra 2 dual core CPU, which may not be its USP as a number of the other tablets are also using the same CPU to power their machines. The distinct advantage is the price which is 429 including the keyboard dock.

The next in the line is the A1CS X220 Tablet which comes with 2 USB ports and a MicroSD slot which means it does what the Samsung 10.1 doesn't, which is having a USB port. It has a 1GHz ARM11 processor and comes with 32 expandable storage and 512 MB of internal memory. The A1CS X220 Tablet comes with a 3G support using WI-FI which is less than what the Motorola Xoom does. But at 154.49 you do get a lot of features and that is what makes this one a great starting Android tablet.

I bought this for my flash drives for school.
The little net against the side works great keeping them secure.
The open space is usually occupied by my ear buds.

I don't think the product was designed with continuous use as the stitching on the zipper is giving out after about two weeks.

If you're only going to use it once in a while (not multiple times daily), it's great.
If you're a daily user, you might want to reinforce the stitching before you begin using it.

I received my bluetooth case in a timely mannner. It can hold my bluetooth (Motorola H17txt) comfortably. I usually put it in the vented holder at the top of the case so it wont move around that much while its in my bag. Its also big enough to place another small item in the case, probably a key or folded money (I would not suggest placing loose coins in holder especially if you plan to carry your bluetooth in the same case.) Case color is the same exact as shown on Amazon Picture. Will buy from seller again.

ood value Android tablet for reading and basic browsinh

   A1CS 10.1" A10 CAPACITIVE MULTI-TOUCH 8GB TABLET, FLASH 11,SUPPORTS IPLAYER, ANDROID 2.3, WIFI, MIFI, HDMI, 2160P WITH CAM

I bought this tablet after a fair bit of research on the various Android tablet forums. For the price difference between this capacitive multitouch version and the cheaper resistive variety, it was worth paying the small extra amount to get the capactive version.

The tablet itself is sturdy and well built, it certainly doesnt feel "cheap" and its not excessively heavy, I have no issues holding in one hand whilst reading. If you have used an Apple iPad the first thing you'll notice is this tablet looks a bit like a deformed narrow iPad - the screen is a netbook style 1024x600 widescreen LCD whereas an ipad is 1024x768 4:3 display. Because the LCD screen used in the A1CS tablet is designed to be used in landscape only, when rotated to portrait which a lot of Android apps force, the screen is hard to read. This is particularly apparent on a black background, the BBC News app in portrait mode causes eye strain after a while.

The capacitive multitouch touchscreen is very good and definately recommended. However, as some have noted on the reviews for the resistive version of this tablet, it is fine when running on battery, and near-unusable when connected to the mains charger! A quick play with the touchscreen diagnostic app shows that when connected to the charger, the detected finger position jumps around all over the place. As soon as the charger is disconnected the touchscreen becomes accurate. The internal battery though is good so with a bit of planning its easy to avoid using whilst on charge. I have managed around 4 - 5 hours continuous web browsing from a fully charged battery. Wifi reception is as good on this as I get on my iPhone 3GS. Amusingly includes an in-built stylus which cannot be used on a capacitive screen, presumably a hang-over from the original resistive design.

There is a fair few bugs in the Android build on this tablet, all are minor such as locking up during sleep mode and needing a manual reset to wake up. These are the kind of bugs that whilst not significant, could be confusing if the tablet is given to someone non-technical.

Some of the pre-installed apps included Kindle, YouTube, and Facebook. Of those, Facebook needed to be upgraded to latest version before it would connect, not tried Kindle but seems to work OK, YouTube app has some glitches, specifically its fine if kept in landscape but if you rotate the device too many times it caused th display driver to freeze and the tablet must be reset. After downloading the Vevo app, between that and Youtube app there is loads of video content and it works very well generally. Angry Birds Seasons ran absolutely fine.

Android Market is free version only and even then LOTS of the free apps seem to be missing... my workaround has been to use Google instead and search for the "APK" of the apps I want, APK being the file format of Android apps and once the APK is downloaded clicking it will cause it to install. The pre-installed web browser Dolphin is slightly faster than any of the other major browsers I downloaded and tried, but expect to wait a little for each page to load. And forget Flash content, Flash 10.1 is installed but its not fast enough to play content from iPlayer and other sites.

Excellent piece of kit.

A1CS X220 TABLET 10.2" ANDROID 2.2, WIFI, MIFI, HDMI, 1080P, GPS WITH CAM

Excellent piece of kit. 1 July 2011
By Dr. A. H. Thompson
I did some serious research into the Tablet market before deciding to buy the A1CS X220 Android Tablet some ten days ago. It seemed to offer everything I wanted - book reader, internet, email, MP3 player, photo and video viewer, and at a price I was prepared to pay. And it has proved to do all these things and more - I really am pleased and impressed with this product. It is well built, comes with GPS aerial, and transformer with an 8 foot cable, making it easy to use well away from a power point. It is comfortable to hold, light enough to use in bed or in a chair, and I have also used it on a train. The battery lasts for at least three hours before it needs recharging and you can use it with the mains connected as well, although I prefer not too as the mains input cable could get in the way, get pulled and thus damaged. The tablet has three inputs, two USB and one Micro SD card which can take up to 32 Gig capacity.

Never having experience an Android device before, it took me a few days and a lot of fun to get used to the system. Android 2.2 is designed for both Tablets and Telephones and this could cause problems though in practice it has not done so. There is a huge variety of Apps available that cover just about everything you might ever need and some you wonder 'why?'. It comes with a good range of useful apps already loaded including QuickOffice, Google Maps and a GPS program, email and Gmail apps, Amazon Kindle, Skype, and a browser, and a range of apps that make the system work effectively. There is a wide range of free apps available through the already installed Google 'Market'. The Manual is small, but almost perfectly formed, and it does contain most of the information you will need at the beginning, although you may need to try things a few times until you get it right. You can also download a Google Android 2.2 Manual from the Internet which is a bit more comprehensive.

I also purchased the 'leather'case with keyboard. This is an excellent addition to the kit and although I have not used the almost full sized keyboard in the lid of the case much yet, I can see that under certain circumstances away from home that it will be most useful. I discovered that the Shift key on the keyboard did not produce capital letters, and an email to A1CS via Amazon was answered the following morning, a micro SD card with a 'fix' on it arrived the next day and all is now working fine. I must say that A1CS is VERY good to deal with, they reply promptly to emails and are most helpful and appreciative of any complimentary comments.

So far this has proved to be an excellent and most enjoyable product - why pay more?

Postscript January 2012

I have now been using my Tablet almost every day since June of last year and am still extremely pleased with this purchase. It does what it is supposed to do and at a really good price. There is a slight disappointment in that the camera in the Tablet does not seem to work with Skype, although Skype works with sound only perfectly well. But that is my only small grumble!

I used the screen protector provided by A1CS and find that it reduces the touch sensitivity of the screen very slightly, although I quickly got used to it. It does protect the screen from damage and scratches, however. New Screen Protectors can be obtained from A1CS. I also keep a sheet of plastic foam between the screen and the keyboard when not in use - it prevents the keyboard from marking the screen protector. Some other points about the Tablet are covered in my answers below.
My BIG grumble is not with A1CS at all but with Google. I and many others have found it impossible to purchase Apps from Android Market, despite the fact that I have registered with Google. The same Apps will download onto an Android Telephone, but not onto an Android Tablet despite the fact that Android 2.2 is designed for both phones and tablets. The range of free Apps is good, but there are one or two I would like to purchase as well. Come on, 'Goggle', get this sorted out!
